A beautiful musing. Thank you Karen. I am grateful for the time with you in DC since I am afraid to return. I love Paris but found an easier life in Charante. I would be happy to work with anyone on navigating the transition to life here. There are expat communities 30 to 40 minutes from me and I am sure that they would be happy to embrace any American expats. Sending much love, Loui

I resonate with every word! Even down to my son living in DC. It’s hard enough keeping my chin up from thousands of miles away; cannot imagine living in the thick of it. Best wishes on that and thanks for writing a darn perfect article.

Staying in SMA during the cold months and then Canada during the warm months is an excellent idea!

Meanwhile, dark times won't stay dark forever.

KF...I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. I'm going to travel more these next few years, but stay in the states. Dark times and not sure we even make it to the mid terms, which I think we'll win...if ...the mad King let's us vote fairly. This is not a hyperbole. I keep reminding friends that Trump won by a mere 2.5 million, but like Goebbels, the message will be repeated over and over that he won by milions and millions. And yes, the walk and talk like a duck or nazi fits, so there's that, plus Vance, Miller, Segwith with his Knights of Malta tatoo, and coming soon Patel of the FBI...That said, there are good men and women fighting now and will continue to do so...my favorite is Sheldon Whitehouse...he is fearless. The thing is not to be scared, because this transactional psycho wants us to be scared. What kind of human never smiles??

Wherever you/I/we end up, there's no hiding and it's time to choose sides and be active, and at the very least send money to the ACLU or Ukraine. Also, The Guardian Newspaper/app is still the best reporting in the world, also Times Radio on youtube. And since you and others are offering up places to flee, I'd take Germany, but really, no place to hide, besides I just switched back to Kaiser. Interesting times...Thanks for providing space to vent..we are not alone, although I need a drink.....all the best, Dana Scott

Oh Karen, I wish I were affluent like you and I would be in Paris in a blink. Yes my kuds are here (2 in Illinois and one in Florida) but I can always fly back and forth. I hate it here. If I won the lottery I'd be out of here in a heartbeat

I DO have good friends all over Paris.

And.

I still lust after that apartment you had near the Jardin.

( tho I could do with a much smaller one)

It is downright scary here!

ONG my son and daughter were married in San Miguel as her parents live there. Of course, 18 years ago, it was a quiet little place with only X pats there, but now so many people and visitors . Such a beautiful place, but I’ll tell you, those cobblestones did me in my last trip there, Fortunately, her parents come to visit us here, which makes it quite pleasant.

I hope the washing machine spin cycle misery will abate soon and leave you with a sense of peace if not happiness about the current situation. (None of us can really be happy about that.) I am glad that you've had such a nice time in Mexico, and that your son and daughter-in-law were able to visit you there. Of course being near them is important. And you do have a lovely home there, and a good support network. So maybe keeping that base in Washington, and just traveling more is a good solution.

I'm looking forward to seeing you when you're in Paris next. In the meantime sending big big hugs your way. xxx
